Those qualities were never said aloud by anyone other than whores and that made him look up from his plate. He gauged her expression and figured out that she wasn't using him at all but was genuine instead. Jack was never complimented by anyone of the upper classes unless they wanted something out of him and even then it was littered with insults. Jack simply wasn't used to it.

"You must have me confused with someone else," Jack said jokingly. "Of course, I do like my meals a certain way though handsome is a rare exception to the rule."

Jack liked his meals hearty considering the time he spends out at sea some things were just so hard to come by. Beef and pork along with fresh vegetables and fruits were rare on long voyages. Mostly it was rum, peanuts and anything else that would last longer than a week if they were pickled.
