C'mon. Just one pancake.

[He leans in, trying to steal a bite.]

Still, looked like bacon.

[Noms pancake]

Nope. Get me some hot chocolate and I'll consider it.

Consider it, huh.

[With Mello, that could go either way. He likes a little bit more of a sure thing before he actually has to move.

He props himself up with his elbow against the table, idly chewing on the bit of parsley.]

Think all this is part of a normal school breakfast?

[Mello shrugs]

God knows. Never did normal school, either, remember.

[Then he licks the chocolate off his lip]

[He thinks about that for a moment. Chocolate chip pancakes. Tons of meat. Yeah, he knows public schools have a reputation for lousy menus, but this one...

Matt didn't think it was lousy at all. It was just that unhealthy.]

It's too tailored. I feel like some hamster running around in a wheel.

[Yeah, Mello knows the feeling. He gives Matt a look that assures him of that fact]

Get me some hot chocolate, I'll give you a pancake.

[He doesn't need to be angry this early. But Goddamn it he knows exactly what Matt means]

Understood.

[Matt smiles a little before going to get some hot chocolate for Mello. Even that seems a little strange to him. He thought they only served milk? Chocolate milk, sure, but hot chocolate? Mello's favorite drink?

Maybe he's just being paranoid. But that's what Matt does best.

He returns with the cup and sits down, opening his mouth wide.]

[Mello cuts a piece of pancake and puts it in Matt's mouth. Then he takes a sip of hot chocolate]

She's definitely catering to us for some reason. This isn't generic grocery store cocoa.

[He taps the rim of his white mug. He should know, he is a connoisseur of this sort of thing]

[Matt smiles a little bit when Mello feeds him. Even if he's just upholding his end of the bargain, he still knows the blond wouldn't make that deal with just anyone to begin with.]

I'm working on a theory. It's not flattering, but...

[He shrugs and swallows...before opening his mouth again.]

[Mello's not paying attention to Matt's reaction, he's sort of lost in thought. He cuts off another piece of pancake and puts it in the redhead's mouth]

And what's that?

Maybe she's not catering to everyone.

[He opens the carton of milk to wash the bite down with.]

Think about it. More than one person here's run into someone they know. Not just someone they know, but someone...

[He trails off. He knows Mello won't like it if he puts himself down. He knows he'll like it even less if he downplays -both- their roles.]

Like that butler. Notice how his employees are showing up? Maybe he's the one she's really interested in.

[Could be. She's definitly working in groups. Mello has the plastic stirrer from his earlier coffee in his mouth and he twists it thoughtfully between his lips as he thinks]

[Matt watches him, watches the wheels go around, and waits.

Waits and reaches over to eat right off of Mello's plate.]

[Mello moves his plate away a little but gives Matt another bite. He's sharing you can't ask for more than that]

I wonder if he's the main character. That doesn't make sense, nothing has happened specifically to him. Nothing that sets him apart from the rest of us. I don't know whether she's doing it on purpose or whether she's just a bad writer.

[Matt can always ask for more than that. He likes pressing his luck.]

Think there's probably more than one. And hell, let's hope it's the first one. We can't do shit about the other option.

[Mello nods as he sips his hot chocolate]

I agree.

Or maybe we can.

[Matt smirks.]

We can get red ink pens and draw all over ourselves.

[The smirk becomes a snicker.]

Dibs on the butler. He'd be pretty funny with a curly red mustache.

Because that would solve everything.

[Mello stabs his pancake thoughtfully before shoving the plate at Matt]

You can have the rest.

[He stares at the door to the cafeteria]

L's back. I saw him this morning.

[Hey, he's not too proud. He pulls the plate closer and digs in.]

Yeah? He's faired fairly well in all this.

[It brings him back to what he was thinking earlier.]

Maybe he's the real horse to bet on.

[Besides the fact that he's...well, -L-]

[Mello nods, he'd just had the exact same thought. Although]

I don't think there is a main character. I think she might have a plan, but none of us are following it.

[He laughs softly.]

Now there's a surprise.

Never did do as we were told.

[Snickers and noms a piece of what is now Matt's pancake]
