[Mello has piled his plate with chocolate chip pancakes, passing on the syrup (and obviously fruit) he sits down at one of the round tables and begins to eat. There aren't enough chocolate chips to his liking, but his mind is otherwise occupied. He's still thinking about L, very worried that the detective has been removed from the story.]

[Matt? Matt's going for the meat. Sausage and bacon and and ham. A poster boy for PETA, he is not. He starts for the table where Mello's sitting, hesitating twice -- once for a box of milk, and the second time for a little sprig of parsley to put on the side of his plate.

Hey. It totally counts as a vegetable.]

[Mello raises his eyebrows at this second]

Parsley?

Yeah, I know.

[Matt grins over at him.]

Usually save my salad for lunch.

[He picks up a piece of bacon while eying Mello's plate.]

Oh yeah, Switzerland called. They want their chocolate back.

How can you eat that shit?

[Mello makes a face at the bacon]

I haven't been able to eat that shit since half of my fucking body looked and smelled exactly like it.

[Not that he's ever eaten it often beforehand]

I wish there was more chocolate in this.

[He pokes his pancakes angrily. He's got some chocolate on his lips]

[Matt is halfway to his mouth with a sausage link when Mello has to go and say that.

He leans back and eyes the meat on his plate.]

Fuck. Hey, gimme a pancake, would ya?

I said bacon, not sausage. And no, get your own damn pancakes.

[Om nom]

What's the difference? Come from the same animal.

C'mon. Just one pancake.

[He leans in, trying to steal a bite.]

Still, looked like bacon.

[Noms pancake]

Nope. Get me some hot chocolate and I'll consider it.

Consider it, huh.

[With Mello, that could go either way. He likes a little bit more of a sure thing before he actually has to move.

He props himself up with his elbow against the table, idly chewing on the bit of parsley.]

Think all this is part of a normal school breakfast?

[Mello shrugs]

God knows. Never did normal school, either, remember.

[Then he licks the chocolate off his lip]

[He thinks about that for a moment. Chocolate chip pancakes. Tons of meat. Yeah, he knows public schools have a reputation for lousy menus, but this one...

Matt didn't think it was lousy at all. It was just that unhealthy.]

It's too tailored. I feel like some hamster running around in a wheel.

[Yeah, Mello knows the feeling. He gives Matt a look that assures him of that fact]

Get me some hot chocolate, I'll give you a pancake.

[He doesn't need to be angry this early. But Goddamn it he knows exactly what Matt means]

[Speak of the Devil. He blinks a few times to make sure he's not imagining it. He wonders momentarily if this is the Author's doing, in that it's a replacement for the real L. But why would she do that when she could easily get at the real thing. But being paranoid, Mello keeps that thought in his head.]

He climbs a bit moodily into a chair. He has chocolate chip pancakes and a side of fruit but it's clear he'd rather be eating some gourmet cake made by Watari.]

[Takes a bite of his pancake.]

[You're welcome = sorry, I'm okay now. Need the homework = for some reason we're in high school now. Like really in high school. Like those classes on your schedule? Those actually meet. And have teachers. And homework.]
