[He smiles dryly.] Thank you.

[Iroh catches the ball and turns it over in his hands. It's like nothing he's seen before.]

How do you play?

[Mello sighs]

I'm not entirely sure.

[He HATES admitting that. But American football was never his sport. Mello was always a soccer kind of a guy]

[Iroh holds the ball out in front of him.]

I suppose this is supposed to be a ball, but it is not spherical.

[He tries to throw it, but the oddly-shaped ball wobbles and flops sadly on the ground.]

Does anyone here know how to play?

It's a pretty shitty sport. You don't kick it you throw it, point first.

[He tosses the ball to Iroh]

Someone here's going to. The sport's damn popular in America. It's almost a fucking religion over there.

[The ball slips through Iroh's fingers. He bends to pick it up, tosses it in his hands, and throws it in an imitation of Mello. Better than his first attempt, but still not great.]

Who here is American, then?

Matt but he doesn't know. That Heather chick, might know.

Are they here? [Iroh looks around the field.] I confess I have not seen either of them since arriving at the school.

[Iroh tries the ball again. Not quite there. He shrugs.]

Matt's here.

[And if you listen to it, you'll note that there is definite relief in Mello's voice. Not having Matt would be a nightmare. But I haven't seen Heather.

[Iroh strokes his beard in thought.] If you can get Matt here, could he teach us the rules?

[One more time! Iroh walks over to the ball and throws it to Mello. The ball still wobbles but the trajectory is more or less straight and it's well aimed. Iroh shakes off his hand, impressed at his own ability. A wisp of smoke curls off his finger.]

[Mello catches it, not the way you're SUPPOSED to in football but fuck the rules.]

Matt's hiding out in the bathroom. He's not going near the gym again.

[Iroh chuckles.]

Perhaps I should follow his example. Not come here, I mean. Outside is nice, of course, but sports...

He's probably in the bathroom with the window closed giving himself lung cancer.

[Tosses the ball back to Iroh]
